Why Your Website Must Work Well on Mobile

Most people will visit your site on a phone. Learn why mobile-friendly design matters for sales and Google, and how to test your own site.

Open your own website on your phone, and then ask a friend to do the same without any help from you. What they struggle with is what your customers struggle with. For most businesses in India, the phone is the main screen, so mobile design is not an extra; it is the website.

Google looks at your mobile site first

Google uses what is called mobile-first indexing: it mainly reads the mobile version of your pages to decide how to rank them. If your phone version hides content, loads slowly or is hard to use, that affects how you appear in search, even for people searching on a computer.

What "mobile friendly" really means

  • Text you can read without zooming. Body text around 16 px or larger.
  • Buttons you can tap. Large enough for a thumb, with space between them.
  • No sideways scrolling. Everything fits the width of the screen.
  • Menus that work. A simple menu, with the important pages one tap away.
  • Forms that are short. Fewer fields, the right keyboard (number pad for phone numbers) and clear error messages.

Speed matters more on a phone

Mobile connections vary, and people are impatient. Large images and heavy scripts are the usual causes of slow pages. Resize images before uploading, use modern formats where possible, and avoid auto-playing videos on the first screen.

Google measures page experience with Core Web Vitals, which include how quickly the main content appears (LCP), how quickly the page responds when tapped (INP) and whether things jump around while loading (CLS). You do not need to memorise them; just aim for a page that appears quickly and stays still.

Make contact effortless

Put a tap-to-call number and a WhatsApp button where they are easy to find. People on mobile often want to ask a quick question, not fill a long form.

How to test your site in five minutes

  1. Open the site on your phone, on mobile data and not only on Wi-Fi.
  2. Try to find your phone number, your address and your main service. Time yourself.
  3. Fill in your own contact form and see how it feels.
  4. Run the page through Google's PageSpeed Insights and read the mobile result.
  5. Ask someone older or less technical to try. Watch where they hesitate.

Beyond the browser

For business tools such as HR or task management, a phone-friendly panel lets employees mark attendance, apply for leave or update tasks from anywhere. Such web apps can even be added to the phone's home screen so they open like a normal app.
