Search engine optimisation, or SEO, simply means making it easy for Google to understand your website and for customers to find the right page. A lot of it is common sense, and you can do the basics yourself.
Start with what people search for
Think about the words a customer would type before they find you: "furniture shop in Ghaziabad", "HR software for small business", "online store for clothes". Write those phrases down. Each important page should be about one of them, in plain language.
Give every page a clear title and description
- Title tag — the blue line in Google results. Keep it under about 60 characters and put the main phrase near the start.
- Meta description — the grey text below it. About 120 to 155 characters that tell a person why they should click.
Every page needs its own. Copying the same title across the whole site tells Google nothing.
Use headings properly
Each page should have one main heading (H1) that says what the page is about, followed by smaller headings (H2, H3) that break the content into sections. Headings help readers scan, and they help search engines understand structure.
Write helpful content
Answer the questions customers ask you on the phone. How long does delivery take? What is included in the price? What should I prepare before we start? A short, honest page that answers one real question will often beat a long page full of general statements.
Make the site fast and mobile friendly
Google mostly looks at the mobile version of your site when ranking it. Compress images, avoid giant photos, and test the pages on your own phone. Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool will point out what is slow.
Set up the free Google tools
- Google Search Console — shows which searches bring people to you and tells you if Google has trouble reading your pages. Submit your sitemap.xml there.
- Google Business Profile — essential for local searches, with your address, hours, phone and photos.
Be consistent with your details
Your business name, address and phone number should be written the same way on your website, your Google Business Profile and your social pages. Consistency builds trust with both people and search engines.
Be patient
SEO rarely brings overnight results. New pages typically take weeks to be discovered and longer to rank. Keep publishing useful pages, keep your information up to date, and check Search Console once a month to see what is working.
