Most website projects go over budget for one reason: nobody decided what the website was for. The design, the pages and the features all follow from that one decision, so it is worth an hour of thinking before you talk to a developer.

1. Decide what the website must do

Pick one main goal. A website that tries to do everything usually does nothing well. Common goals for a small business are:

  • Get enquiries — calls, WhatsApp messages or form fills from people who found you on Google.
  • Sell products — a full online store with cart, payment and order tracking.
  • Build trust — show your work, your team and your address so new customers feel safe contacting you.

If you are unsure, start with enquiries. It is the simplest goal and the easiest to measure: how many people contacted you this month?

2. Write down who it is for

Describe your typical customer in two sentences. What are they looking for when they search? What worries them before they buy? Your headlines and page order should answer those worries in the order the customer feels them.

3. List the pages you really need

For most small businesses, five pages are enough to begin with:

  • Home — what you do, for whom, and how to contact you.
  • Services or Products — one clear section for each thing you sell.
  • About — who is behind the business.
  • Contact — phone, WhatsApp, e-mail, address, map and a short form.
  • Blog or FAQ — answers to the questions customers already ask you.

You can always add pages later. It is much harder to remove pages that nobody had time to write properly.

4. Gather your content early

Delays almost never come from coding; they come from waiting for text and photos. Before the project starts, collect your logo, real photos of your work or shop, your services with a short description, prices or price ranges if you can share them, and a few customer reviews with permission.

5. Plan for mobile first

Most visitors from India will open your site on a phone. Check that your main button, phone number and WhatsApp link are easy to tap with a thumb. Our post on why mobile-friendly design matters explains what to test.

6. Think about what happens after launch

A website is not finished on launch day. Decide who will answer enquiries, who will update prices, and where the site is hosted. Ask your developer for a written list of what is included in support, so there are no surprises later.

A quick checklist to copy

  • One main goal for the website
  • A two-sentence description of your customer
  • A list of pages and who writes each one
  • Logo, photos and text ready before design starts
  • Phone, WhatsApp and e-mail details confirmed
  • A named person who will reply to enquiries
